Equestrian team’s horses get new home

The University’s new varsity equestrian team will have a facility today, University officials said.
A pole barn — a long building with an equipment and feed room on the end — is being built on S. Milledge Avenue next to the Animal Science Arena.
“The pole barn is basically a roof with poles as the supporting structure on the outside of the barn,” said Nick Carden, the team’s animal assistant. “There are not really exterior walls.”
The rest of the space will consist of stalls for the team’s 35 to 38 horses, Georgia head coach Meghan Boenig said.
“We’re currently stalling our horses under the Ani-mal Science Arena,” Carden said.
Half of the horses are put out to pasture during the day while the other half are put out at night, he said.
Construction began on the barn one month ago, and team members said it will be a temporary facility for the team.
“The new barn is allowing us to have the horses off the concrete until the main building is built,” Boenig said.
Once the team’s main building is built, the pole barn will be used by the Animal Science Department and for hay storage and overflow from horse shows, Boenig said.
The barn will be the third pole barn built near the Arena, said Erin Hernandez, a junior from Marietta and the co-captain of the team.
“There are already two out there but they are used by the Animal Science Department for University horses,” Hernandez said.
The equestrian team is still looking for some big-money donors to sponsor individual stalls for the main building.
“Construction won’t start on our main building until the team gets more donations,” she said.
