Athlete claims he is attacked in McWhorter
A female University visitor was arrested Wednesday night at McWhorter Hall on charges of criminal trespass and battery against a Georgia football player.
Charlotte Rena Thomas was accused of scratching Darrell Deandre Holmes, a sophomore defensive tackle for the University’s football team.
Thomas and Holmes, who have a child together, were allegedly having an argument in Holmes’ McWhorter dorm room during which Thomas refused to leave, said University Police Chief Chuck Horton.
When the arresting officer arrived on the scene, he conducted an investigation and arrested Thomas for battery and criminal trespass under the Family Violence Code, according to a University Police report.
The Family Violence Code allows police officers to make an arrest if there is evidence of abuse within a family, or when a domestic abuse incident occurs, Horton said.
Even though Holmes and Thomas are not married, police can make an arrest using the Family Violence Code because the pair have a child, Horton said.
Holmes suffered scratches on his face, neck, cheeks and under his right eye, Horton said.
Holmes was believed to have called police at about 6:09 p.m., according to police.
The child was not present when police entered the dorm.
Following Thomas’ arrest, she was transported to the Athens-Clarke County jail, according to the police report.
Thomas was given a barring notice, which restricts her from entering McWhorter Hall, the Butts-Mehre Building and all University athletic property for the next two years, according to the report.
A visitor or student may receive a barring notice when a person commits any crime, burglary or other illegal activity on campus.
Thomas is charged with two misdemeanor counts, which could result in a maximum fine of $1,000 and/or up to 12 months in jail for each count.
Thomas declined to comment on the incident.
Holmes could not be reached Thursday afternoon.
