Ceremony lauds humorist, writer, University alumnus
Ten years after his death, a commemorative ceremony celebrated the life of best-selling author, syndicated columnist and University graduate Lewis Grizzard.
“He was the smartest and funniest person I have ever known,” said Steve Enoch, Grizzard’s manager and long-time friend during the ceremony Friday.
Students present at the 20-minute event also expressed fondness for the man.
“I had to scour the libraries to find his writing because he is so popular,” said Brian Harris, a senior from Locust Grove. “I love his writing and have read all I could get my hands on.”
Directors from The Lewis Grizzard Foundation announced several programs designed to continue the legacy of the southern humorist at Friday’s service.
Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication sponsors an annual writing competition in his memory to expose a new generation of Georgians to his unique writing style. The winner receives the Lewis Grizzard Scholarship.
Applications and additional information may be obtained in August in Room 201 of the Office of Undergraduate Services.
“Lewis would be both mildly embarrassed and secretly impressed by all the attention being paid to him by his beloved Bulldogs,” said his wife, Dedra Grizzard, who spoke at the service.
“It’s amazing how only a few years after his death, people already acknowledge him so much,” said Timothy Bartholow, director of the Performing Arts Center.
A collection of his papers and manuscripts are being donated to the University library.
“It has been difficult parting with Lewis’ personal effects, but after ten years, I have decided it’s time,” Dedra Grizzard said.
“I can’t think of a better place for them,” she said. “Lewis always kept this place very near and dear to his heart.”
A touring re-creation of Lewis’ popular stage shows will be coming to Athens next month. Performances include classic stories his fans loved and new readings from his columns and book.
The first Athens staging of this one-man show will be held at the University Performing Arts Center on April 22, 2005. Some profits from the show will benefit the Lewis Grizzard Foundation.
