Local farm grows maize of amazing scale

John and Donna Washington’s farm in Watkinsville has a cannon that shoots ears of corn, a rope for swinging like Tarzan and a rooster who thinks it’s a goat.
It also has a 360,000-stalk corn maze to make everything else a little difficult to reach.
The maze is spread out over six acres containing 60,000 stalks each, according to farm owners John and Donna Washington.
The maze is designed each year to fit the farm’s theme, John Washington said.
This year’s maze, designed around the theme of “Fun at the Farm,” includes the name of the farm, a tractor, designs of pumpkins and other items on the farm, he said.
The maze also features clues at certain points, “if we get them finished (by the opening),” he said. “If you get the clue right, you’ll go in the right direction.”
He said the entire maze takes about an hour to complete, but is divided into two parts for parents who take their children through but get tired by the halfway point.

Washington Farms is located in Watkinsville, about 20 minutes from the University.
John Washington, owner of the farm, said his family opened Washington Farms after he began talking with some strawberry farmers from North Carolina.
“John didn’t grow up on a farm,” said Donna Washington, John’s wife. “He was a financial planner, but majored in Forestry at UGA.
“He just needed to be outside,” she said.
The farm also has pigs, rabbits, goats and a rooster in its petting zoo.
Donna Washington advised visitors to watch out for the goats.
“They will try to nibble on your clothes,” she said. “And so will the bunnies.”
There is even a rooster who hangs with the goats.
“The rooster hadn’t seen one of my male goats, Prince, in a few weeks. When he finally did see him, he followed him around everywhere,” John Washington said. “Prince couldn’t get rid of that rooster. He would butt heads with the other male goats, but he couldn’t figure out what to do with that rooster.”
The farm also features a slingshot for launching tiny pumpkins into a murky pond, shaded picnic areas, a sandbox and hay-filled wagon rides.
“You never know what a day’s gonna hold,” Donna Washington said.
