Those who are involved in the Athens social scene may very well find themselves as part of a song by the local band The High Caliber.

“There are people in town who have influenced a great deal of these songs,” said Tom Salmon, guitarist and vocalist for The High Caliber.

He said people who know Athens often come to the shows and know who they are singing about in the songs.

The High Caliber, along with fellow local band Count Kellam, will open for Cleveland, Ohio-based band RouZ on Wednesday at the Caledonia Lounge.

The popularity of Internet databases is partially responsible for getting the lineup together.

“We were on MySpace, and Count Kellam was talking about RouZ coming to town and wanting to have another band play with them,” Salmon said.

“We have had a lot of good things happen from being online,” he said.

The High Caliber also uses the internet to promote its music throughout the United States and overseas, Salmon said.

When it comes to music, The High Caliber plays it simple.

“We do not do the guitar-solo-jam thing for 20 minutes,” he said. “Most of our songs are three or four minutes.”

Above all, the band wants people to remember its songs, Salmon said.

“We try to play very catchy, melodic pop songs,” he said. “Usually, we run into somebody downtown a week or two after we play, and they say that they have been singing our songs since they saw us.”

RouZ has a different take on music, compared to The High Caliber.

Singer and guitarist Justin Coulter of RouZ said its music is “pretty heavy,” even though pop melodies are present.

“I think of it in layers,” he said. “The first layer is overbearing noise, and underneath is a lot of melody and pop. Then, the really heavy foundation is like the rhythm section.”

The melodies and intense sounds come from the band members’ wide-ranging influences.

“For John (Kalman, bass), his favorite band is probably The Beatles, so we have these super-melodic, pop bass lines,” Coulter said. “And I like Sonic Youth, so I play a lot of noise. And Steve (Mehlman, drums) likes more industrial rhythmic music.”

While the band has been playing together for about three and a half years, it has limited its shows to its hometown. The band has decided to play here because Coulter’s sister attends school in Athens, though it is

unaware if it has any fans, he said.

“I have been (to Athens) once,” he said. “It seemed really cool to me, and I have only heard good things about it.”

Coulter said the show at the Caledonia Lounge will mostly include songs from the upcoming record that will be out in a few months, which includes songs from its EP.

“And we have one or two that are not recorded, so it will be a good mix,” he said.
