Who is Better Than Ezra?

Anyone who has wondered where rock band Better Than Ezra got its name may just have to use his imagination.
Lead guitarist and vocalist Kevin Griffin said the band decided years ago not to tell anyone the origin of its name.
“We used to tell people what it meant,” Griffin said, “but we found that they weren’t as interested because it was such a let-down.”
The mysteriously named band will play at the 40 Watt Club tonight.
Griffin said the band will get the audience involved in the show, as usual, by bringing someone onstage to play the cowbell or guitar – or dance with glow sticks.

“Last night we did a show and we saw this guy in the back rave-dancing with glow sticks,” Griffin said. “I was so impressed that someone was actually still doing that, we brought him up onstage.”
The band plans to play a lot of new songs at this show, Griffin said.
Better Than Ezra recently released its second single, “Our Last Night,” off its newest album, “Before the Robots,” which was released last spring.
Another song, “Juicy,” was picked up by the popular TV series “Desperate House-wives” and will be the theme song for its new season.
Griffin, who writes all of the band’s songs, lists influences ranging from Kings of Leon to U2.
“I’m a huge music fan, regardless of style,” Griffin said. “Our music is all over the map. I’d say originally it was power pop and rock, but ‘Juicy,’ you know, that has more of a late-’70s disco sound.”
He said the variety in the band’s music may have enabled it to stick around for so long.
The band began as a college collaboration in 1988 while the guys were freshmen at Louisiana State University.
Griffin and his band- mates, who all live in Louisiana, have found themselves displaced since Hurricane Katrina.
The group has been involved in numerous benefits and telethons over the past month to raise money for relief efforts.
