UF student killed in Jacksonville after game
A University of Florida student was beaten to death Saturday night after the Georgia-Florida football game.Officer Ken Jefferson, the Jacksonville Police Department spokesman, said a surveillance video shows Thomas Brown, a junior at the University of Florida, being cornered then pinned down by three men and assaulted by two others. No weapons were involved.Jacksonville police officers were called at 10:42 Saturday night to an area behind the CSX building on Water Street in downtown Jacksonville to break up a fight, Jefferson said.Police found Brown on the ground, unconscious, with no pulse or heartbeat. Rescuers attempted to revive Brown but were unsuccessful. He was rushed to Shands-Jacksonville hospital where he died an hour later, Jefferson said.He said that witnesses gave the police a description of the suspects and said they fled the scene in a taxi. Investigators found the cab driving on Beach Boulevard, near the Intercoastal Waterway. They arrested the seven passengers and charged five of the suspects with murder: Alex Samuel Canzano, 21; Mark Tyler Foss, 18; Jeffery Richard Groncziak, 19; Jeremy Alan Lane, 21 and Casey Michael Schuurman, 19. Four of the suspects were Jacksonville natives and none were college students, the Associated Press reported.Police are working to determine the motive of the attack. It is uncertain if alcohol was a factor. The victim’s father, Thomas Brown, told The Florida Times-Union that he was informed by a detective that some words were exchanged between his son and the attackers.”He might have said something he shouldn’t have, but it doesn’t add up to murder,” Brown told the Associated Press. “This isn’t a fight, this is a massacre.”
