Student strikes officer with vehicle
A University student was arrested early Sunday morning after he charged his vehicle through barricades and hit an officer, police said.
Brian Thomas Soule was driving his gold Toyota Corolla east on Baldwin Street at about 12:11 a.m. when he crashed through two barricades, the University police report said.
An officer told Soule to stop, but he continued driving and turned north onto Thomas Street.
When Athens-Clarke County Capt. Timothy Smith, who was directing traffic, approached the driver’s side of the vehicle, Soule accelerated and struck Smith, the report said.
Smith was not injured.
Soule then turned west onto Fulton Street and was stopped at the intersection of Fulton and Jackson Streets.
He got out of the car and ran south on Jackson Street from police, the report said.
Two officers subdued Soule and charged him with aggravated assault, driving under the influence, obstruction of justice, reckless driving and failure to obey person directing traffic, police said.
Efforts to contact Soule Monday afternoon were unsuccessful.
