Late Dog comeback tops Tech

By on November 26, 2006

The Georgia defense, it would appear, has figured something out about Georgia Tech quarterback Reggie Ball.

For the fourth straight season, the Bulldogs beat Ball and the No. 14 Yellow Jackets, this time 15-12 in Athens.

The Bulldogs are now 8-4 with two straight wins over ranked opponents.

They are waiting to accept a bid to a post-season bowl, likely the Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta, the Liberty Bowl in Memphis, Tenn., or the Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. Representatives from the Chick-fil-A Bowl and Liberty Bowl attended Saturday’s game.

Ball did plenty to help Georgia win.

Ball finished 6-of-22 for 42 yards. He fumbled once (Tony Taylor returned the fumble taken out of the pile for a touchdown) and was intercepted twice, once by Paul Oliver to end the game and another on a deflection by Quentin Moses.

Tech All-American receiver Calvin Johnson was shut down by Oliver, catching two passes for 13 yards.

Georgia finished its tough regular season with a comeback win featuring a late game-winning drive from freshman quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Stafford led Georgia 64 yards on 12 plays and completed a 4-yard touchdown to Mohamed Massaquoi with 1:45 left. Massaquoi then caught the two-point conversion.

Stafford ended the game 16-of-29  for 171 yards, a touchdown and no interceptions. Massaquoi caught six passes for 46 yards. In his final game, tight end Martrez Milner had three catches for 33 yards. Neither Massaquoi nor Milner dropped a pass.
