New comedy show fails to captivate audiences

By on January 22, 2007

Add one part naked trucker musician and one part retarded hitchhiker, and you’ve got yourself a mediocre sketch comedy that needs some improvement.

Dave “Gruber” Allen and David Koechner (of “Anchorman” fame) star as the Naked Trucker and T-Bones in Comedy Central’s “The Naked Trucker and T-Bones Show.”

NAKED TRUCKER & T-BONES

Grade: C+
Verdict: A middle-of-the-road variety show that most likely will fall off the radar.

It begins as T-Bones walks onstage with Naked Trucker and shields him with an American flag. He then is revealed to be wearing nothing but shoes, a hat and his guitar. Through different skits, we are shown their adventures as Naked Trucker searches for a record deal.

Of course, they’re always going back and forth since Naked Trucker is the brains, and T-Bones is, well, not. Unfortunately, it’s just not that funny and most of the humor comes from T-Bones doing moronic things.

However, the highlight of the entire show is the guest appearance by Will Ferrell.

He is hilarious – as usual – and really transforms the show into something people would tune in to watch every week. Sadly, as he was only a guest, I can’t see that hilarity happening every episode.

Another problem I found is they focused on the fact that Naked Trucker was a musician, and he carried his guitar everywhere, yet he almost never plays anything. They did a very short skit where he sang a funny song, but the show would be funnier if they could show more of this.

In the end, it seems like it could be a funny sketch comedy, but it just doesn’t have enough funny skits to make you want to come back for more.
