India Nite stars diverse dancers

By on February 22, 2007

Get out your sari and put on your dancing shoes because it’s that time of year again.

India Nite, the enormously popular entertainment event sponsored by the Indian Cultural Exchange, will feature 12 high energy acts at the Classic Center Saturday.

However, this is not the normal natya (Indian classical dance). This year’s acts will feature everything, including hip-hop, rock and Bulldawg Ba Raaj, the University’s award-winning Indian dance performance group.

“It’s fast-paced and entertainment-based,” said Sonia Talathi, a sophomore from Alpharetta and one of ICE’s event organizers.

Coming close to filling the Classic Center to capacity in the past, event organizers say viewers can expect the same quality on India Nite.

“This year’s India Nite is the same as previous India Nite’s only with more of a variety,” said Damini Patel, a senior from Albany and fellow event organizer. “Our theme is yaadin, which means memories through time, so we have a lot more acts with older music added to it.”

India Nite not only includes groups from the University, but also introduces acts from around the Southeast.

Nineteen different acts auditioned for 12 spots and were judged on originality, group cohesion and performance quality by judges with backgrounds ranging from Indian ethnicity to professors from the dance and drama schools.

Because of the variety present in the acts, event organizers have high expectations for this year’s turnout.

Patel said, “It’s one of the biggest shows of its kind in the southeast.”
