Carolyn Chen to share vision for directing, cinematography

By on February 26, 2007

If an actor is the representation of a story, then the director and cinematographer are the visions behind how that story will look. The traditions of how they prepare this vision, however, are evolving with the changing technological landscape.

Los Angeles-based director and cinematographer Carolyn Chen will speak at the University today to explain her methods.

CAROLYN CHEN

When: 7 tonight
Where: SLC Room 150
Price: Free

Chen has worked on many projects, including Weezer’s “Say It Ain’t So” music video, commercials for Verizon, Nissan and Subaru and films such as “Empire Records” and “Army of Darkness.”

Grady College telecommunications lecturer James Biddle is bringing Chen to the University as a fan.

“I really like her work, and I really like her attitude toward her work,” he said.

Biddle said Chen uses the Internet and research databases to map out her vision for her projects.

Students are encouraged to bring laptops to follow the process with Chen.

Biddle hopes the aspiring cinematographers and directors will learn how to effectively communicate with crews in bringing their vision to the screen.
