Editor’s Note: This Q & A with George Issa, stand-in president of the Breakdancing Club at the University, is the first in a semester-long series on campus clubs and groups.

Q: How long have you been in on campus?
A: Seven years.

Q: What is the history of your organization?
A: Basically, some b-boys around campus started breaking together and began doing performances for events, organizations, charities, etc. Leadership has been passed down, and I took over last
year.

Q: Why does your organization exist?
A: To promote the knowledge, love and ideas of hip-hop culture and b-boying/b-girling.

Q: What is a common misconception about your organization and how would you clarify it?
A: Most people really don’t know what breaking is. Breaking (the proper term is b-boying/b-girling) is one of the four elements of the hip-hop culture. Also, most people
think ‘Wow, it would be cool to do that,’ but most don’t think that they actually could – anyone can learn. We all look awkward and ridiculous when we start, but with enough time
and practice, anyone can learn it.

Q: What is your motto for the organization?
A: We’re here to bring true hip-hop awareness to Athens through dance as well as to create bonds between people of all backgrounds.

Q: What is the most important thing someone can do for your organization?
A: Other than joining, probably donating money. We’re putting on another big battle this spring, and we need funding badly.

Q: What other campus activities do you participate in?
A: Relay For Life, Dance Marathon and other charities throughout the year.

Q: Who is encouraged to join your organization?

A: Anyone and everyone. We love mixing it up with as many different people as we can.

Q: Are members required to go to meetings to stay on the roster?
A: We prefer they come to practice, but there are no mandatory meetings.

Q: What should students know about this organization?
A: We exist, all are welcome and we do performances. (If you need entertainment for something, we’d be happy to come dance for a small fee – we’re free for charity events, though.)

Q: Is there anything else students should know about your organization?
A: We love and need new members. Come check us out.
