Student pleads guilty
A University doctoral student pleaded guilty to computer pornography charges Monday, but sentencing will not occur until November so he can finish his research, according to Peachtree City’s The Citizen.
Govinda Bahadur Basnet, 42, was arrested in December and charged with computer pornography and obscene Internet contact. The Red & Black reported that he enticed an undercover Peachtree City police officer, whom he thought was a 15-year-old girl, for sex and sent a naked photo of himself through e-mail.
Basnet researches ecological and environmental anthropology at the University on a student visa from Nepal.
According to The Citizen, Basnet was dismissed from his job at the University after his arrest.
Basnet lived with his wife and son in University family housing at the time of the arrest. His two-year-old son was at home with him during the arrest, said Peachtree City Police Chief Jim Murray. Basnet was released on bond after spending a month in jail.
The arrest is a part of Peachtree City’s Internet Task Force Operation.
