With football taking over the University sports scene in the fall, many students overlook several of the other sports on campus. In addition to volleyball and soccer, another campus sport is making a splash this season.

As a club sport, the swim club allows people of all levels of experience to join the team.

“We have had people ranging from varsity swimmers to people who just want the exercise come swim with us,” said former vice president Stephen Floyd, a senior from Oconee.

This season should bring success with a new coach, former University swimmer Gretchen Schmaltz. Practices are Monday through Thursday from 9 to 10 p.m. and consist of physical activity in and out of the pool.

“We do dryland training with medicine balls, weights and running stadium stairs along with swimming around two miles,” said vice president Bethany Turner, a junior from Marietta.

Practices are open to anyone interested, and meets are optional to those looking to just get a good swim workout.

According to a few members, one of the best parts of being a part of swim club is the traveling.

“We have out-of-town meets in cities like New Orleans and it is so much fun to go different places with the team,” Turner said.
