The show also will be held Friday night.
ANNUAL UNIVERSITY
HOLIDAY CONCERT
When: 8 tonight and Friday
Where: Hugh Hodgson Performing Arts Center
Price: $7 for students, $15 for non-students
“For as long as anyone can remember, there has been some sort of celebratory concert at this time of year,” said Allen Crowell, the director of choral activities at Hugh Hodgson.
This year’s performance will include choruses from Handel’s “Messiah,” a jazz version of the traditional carol “I Wonder as I Wander,” and finally “A Feast of Carols,” a medley by Randol Bass.
Brazilian graduate student Claudio Esteves will conduct the Chorus and Concert Choir in two traditional carols.
Mitos Andaya, an associate professor and conductor of the Messiah segment of the concert, said the event will offer classics such as Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker Suite” and new approaches to well-known pieces.
“The Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy is quite well-known and can put folks in a dreamy yet festive mood,” Andaya said.
Crowell, who is conducting “A Feast of Carols,” said every year is different.
“For instance, this year’s Men’s Glee Club is perhaps the strongest, most musical one in my nine years here,” he said. “They will be bringing a very special sound to the program.”
Tickets can be purchased from the Performing Arts Center box office for $15 for non-students and $7 for students with a valid UGA ID.
