The organization for Jewish life on campus, UGA Hillel, organized and hosted what they called “Uga’s Party” on Sunday evening.

The party was focused on the winter holidays, and was geared toward underprivileged children living in Athens and the surrounding areas.

“This is actually modeled after an event in Atlanta called ‘Amy’s Party,’” said Abby Boorstin, a sophomore from Atlanta majoring in env-ironmental health sciences.

Boorstin said she participated in “Amy’s Party” during high school, and that they wanted to have a holiday party for kids here.

“Uga seemed like a good mascot for that,” she said, even though the legendary mascot wasn’t actually at the party.

Campus organizations, including Kappa Kappa Gamma, also worked with the Hillel to provide a number of the volunteers.

Hillel also asked groups on campus to help provide gifts for the children.

“They were donated by sororities and fraternities and other campus organizations,” Boorstin said.

“We also got donations from the local congregation,” said Ben Perlow, a junior from Marietta double majoring in psychology and religion.

“Athens is one of the poorest areas in the country,” Perlow said. “We just thought it would be a good idea for people of all different faiths to come together to do something for the children.”
