Atlanta-based ambient rock band Deerhunter will play in Athens tonight at the Georgia Theater, along with Atlanta psychedelic punk band Black Lips and local mainstay Dead Confederate.

Deerhunter consists of Bradford Cox on vocals, Lockett Pundt on guitar, Moses Archuleta on drums and percussion, Josh Fauver on bass and Colin Mee on guitar. Mee has left the band because of differences with Cox but is finishing out the tour.

The band will play one of two remaining shows left on its tour before taking an indefinite hiatus.

“They just want to take some time off,” said Joe Bradley, the drummer of the Black Lips. “Atlas Sound [Cox's solo project] is probably going to take some tours.”

“I definitely don’t think it’s going to be anything permanent,” said Ethan Brown, incoming Local Music Director for WUOG.

Although Cox was born in Athens and Deerhunter recorded both its debut album “Turn It Up Faggot” as well as its second album “Cryptograms” just outside of Athens, most would not consider the band to have much of an influence on the Athens music scene.

“I honestly don’t consider Deerhunter a huge part of the Athens music scene,” Brown said. “I feel like they’ve really become an international band.”

Ross Shapiro, lead singer of longtime Athens local band The Glands and manager of Schoolkids Records downtown said he holds little regard for Deerhunter.

Shapiro said the band is not one that makes it to his playlist often.

Brown said the Theatre normally only books acts at the forefront of the Athens scene.

“I’ve always wanted to play there,” Bradley said.

But even he notices the stylistic differences apparent between the traditional view of the Theatre and the lineup for tonight.

“It seems like I’ve seen a Dave Matthews cover band on the marquee at the Georgia Theatre every time I walk by,” he said.

Regardless of the venue, Bradley said the music is about having fun.

“Some people just want to stand there and look cool,” he said. “Don’t be embarrassed about having fun.”
