Deepstep brings high-impact country to Athens

By on January 9, 2008

Its name is Deepstep. A little bit of Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley, Brad Paisley and George Strait all in one. This band is one of the biggest in country music to come out of Georgia.

The band performs at 10 tonight at the Georgia Theatre.

“The guys are huge Georgia fans,” says Brandon McEachern, their manager. Deepstep already has opened for Brantley Gilbert at the Georgia Theatre, but this will be their first time headlining there.

“Seeing these guys perform is one of those rare opportunities where you will be able to go out, have a great time tonight, and, in a year or two, be able to say ‘I saw those guys live.’ That’s how big they’ll be,” said Geoff Wilson of Athens, who saw Deepstep perform last year at the Georgia Theatre.

“They really will be superstars in a few years – I’m fairly certain. I’ve never liked country, and I think these guys are great,” he said.

In addition to performing their own songs, Deepstep also covers other popular country music songs.

From country music Top-40 songs to classic country and rock-flavored songs, Deepstep covers broad musical territory.

“This dynamic dance-until-you-drop band nails a high-impact performance every time with a unique stage presence and full speed ahead style that keeps the house vibrating with energy and excitement,” according to the band’s Web site.

The band has played with such artists as Little Big Town, Craig Morgan and Tracy Lawrence. It also has played at the Wild Horse Saloon in Nashville, and at B.B. King’s where it was featured in the CMAfest.

Deepstep now has a recording deal with Cupit Records in Nashville, Tenn., with Jerry Cupit, who discovered Tim McGraw and Lonestar.

In writing its own music, the band gets its inspiration from such artists as Merle Haggard, Kenny Chesney, Dierks Bentley and George Strait, said McEachern.

Aside from the Brantley brothers, who perform the lead vocals, these musicians have been playing together for a little more than a year, he said.

Still, Deepstep has a combined 40 years of performance under its belt.

McEachern also said that Athens residents and students can “expect a high energy and very interactive show.”

The band plans to throw a free party later in the spring for the sorority or fraternity with the highest attendance at the concert tonight.
