Man driving Univ. van gets DUI

A University employee was arrested Thursday and charged with DUI while driving a University van.
According to Athens-Clarke County and University Police reports:
A passerby called ACC Police at 12:20 a.m. to report a reckless driver on West Broad Street driving a white van with two flat tires and a Clarke County government license plate.
The caller told police the van turned into the Red Rooster parking lot on West Broad Street. Police found the van unattended. Brett Jason Rudolph came out of the restaurant and his breath smelled of alcohol.
ACC Police called University Police. The University police officer reported that while making a traffic stop on Lumpkin Street, he saw a van with two flat tires drive by.
Rudolph told officers he was driving the van from the cellular biology building down Lumpkin when the tires blew out. He said he planned to leave the University van in the Red Rooster parking lot overnight.
Rudolph taken to the Clarke County Jail. The 1991 white Dodge Ram van was towed to the University Police station.
It is unclear why Rudolph, a systems administrator specialist who handles IP duties for cellular biology, was driving the van during the early hour of the morning.
Kathy Vinson, business manager III, said Thursday it is common for employees in cellular biology to use University vehicles as the department is in two buildings.
“They are used as needed for work only … for convenience,” Vinson said. She was unable to comment on the specifics of Rudolph’s incident.
Efforts to reach Rudolph were unsuccessful.
