Softball Dogs sweep Mercer, snag second perfect game

The Georgia softball team combined a come-from-behind victory with a perfect game win for a double-header sweep of the Mercer Bears on Wednesday.
The Bulldogs (39-19, 10-12 SEC) dominated the second game of the twin bill, unleashing at the plate and controlling the Bears (30-23) from the mound winning 8-0.
Sarah McCloud and Kate Gaskill teamed up to throw a perfect game, allowing no hits, no runs, and striking out four.
McCloud started the game and earned the win pitching four flawless innings.
“It feels really good,” McCloud said. “Kate and I have both been working on our break all week and it really showed tonight.”
The perfect game against the Bears Wednesday was the second of the season for Georgia and Gaskill, with the first coming March 15 against South Carolina.
Offensively, the Bulldogs were led by freshman Megan Wiggins and junior Kristin Schnake, who tallied two RBIs apiece. Centerfielder Taylor Schlopy hit two doubles, and scored three runs.
The Bulldogs won the first game in exciting fashion coming from behind in the bottom of the seventh frame to send the game into extra innings.Georgia entered the bottom half of the seventh trailing 1-0 when Melissa Wood drew a walk to start the rally. A sacrifice bunt by first basemen Brianna Hesson advanced pinch-runner Jennie Auger to second base. Christina Reed then stepped to the plate and drilled a line drive double into to the left-center gap, scoring Auger. Reed was 0-2 at the plate before she delivered the extra base hit.
“I was frustrated at that point, but I just really wanted to go in there and get something done for the team,” Reed said. “I went in there with the approach that I was not leaving the box without a hit.”
Mercer pushed across a run the top of the eighth, to retake the lead 2-1. The Bulldogs quickly mounted another rally, loading the bases. Wiggins drove in the tying run with an RBI groundout to short.
After an intentional walk to clean-up hitter Alisa Goler, Wood sent a line drive into left field scoring Sojourner Moody for the game winning run and a final score of 3-2.
“I knew that there was only one out and all we needed was a pop fly and if I couldn’t get it done Bree [Hesson] could right behind me,” Wood said. “She’d been getting it done all day. There really was no pressure.”
