Search engine donates to University charities
Making money is a problem most students face, but for a few organizations around campus, it just got a little easier. The University’s Habitat for Humanity, College Republicans, Dance Marathon, Wesley Foundation and Athletic Association have all found a new approach to raising money.
They have all created accounts on GoodSearch.com, an online search engine that donates a penny per search to each user’s charity of their choice. All users of the site have to do is choose a non-profit organization from a drop-down menu on the homepage, type in the query of their choice in the search bar above it, and then press the “search” button.
It’s extremely convenient, and according to Clay Kirkland, the Director of Intern and Leadership Development for the Wesley Foundation, “it’s an easy way to help any organization that you believe in and are affiliated with.” Apparently, this Web site has found its way around a variety of campus charities and causes by word of mouth. Kirkland said that he heard about Goodsearch.com through another organization and then explored the site himself to see what it had to offer.
He said that it was an “easy decision” to decide to use this website because he understood “how it can help many organizations” including his own. According to Christina Faust, the co-president of Habitat for Humanity, students should use GoodSearch.com because “it supports an awesome cause” and because the “more people that use it, the more money it donates.” Habitat for Humanity has currently raised $43.31 since the website’s inception in 2005 and only $2.60 since the beginning of this year.
While the Web site hasn’t yielded much revenue, Faust appreciates the money it has brought in. She said, “It pays for a window in a house with no work involved. It’s no cost for us and it’s nice PR.”
To increase revenue, however, Faust suggests that students set GoodSearch.com as their homepage. “It’s not as good as Google, but it’s good to find something common.” With everyone’s help, GoodSearch.com can enable many organizations on this campus to bring in an abundance of extra money and reach more people than ever.
