Credibility-lacking cases dropped

By on June 5, 2008

Charges were dropped against Julianne Robbins Tamplin, 22, who was charged with cocaine possession in November 2007.

The Athens-Clarke County District Attorney’s Office “reviewed the file and considered the police report with the negative drug test and decided it would be difficult to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt,” Kim Stephens, Tamplin’s attorney, said.

Her request to test at the jail, a negative test within 10 hours of the arrest and negative tests every 30 days following the arrest helped, Stephens said.

Co-defender Timothy Sanders Wallis, 22, plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession.

“The credibility of the officer’s statement was questioned with Tamplin’s negative drug test,” Stephens said.

The original police report stated Tamplin and Wallis were found in possession of cocaine at a Kappa Alpha party at the Classic Center.

Charges were also dropped against Mathieu Van Asten, 19, who was charged with battery and false imprisonment in October 2007.

“The panel that heard this case acknowledged it was the longest UGA judicial program hearing they’ve heard,” Kim Stephens, also Van Asten’s attorney, said.

The panel heard 30 hours of testimony and said there was no violation of the code of conduct.

“A statement was issued that basically said they were involved in an immature relationship between two immature people,” Stephens said.

The University has cleared Van Asten to attend classes, Stephens said.

The original police report stated Van Asten hit the University female and held her in his home against her will.
