Gwinnett campus to expand
University students at the Gwinnett campus will have more classroom space as the University expands several programs.
In May, the University left its location at the Gwinnett University Center in Lawrenceville that it shared with Georgia Perimeter and Georgia Gwinnett Colleges.
The college will rent a 60,000 square foot site in the Intellicenter building, constructed in 2006 on Server Road.
“This move gives us more space to accommodate our growing academic and continuing education programs in Gwinnett,” Bob Boehmer, associate provost for institutional effectiveness and extended campuses for the Gwinnett campus said. “The building is very accessible and provides flexible space for offices and classrooms of various sizes.”
The site will offer extensions of main campus programs such as the Educational Technology Training Center and the Small Business Development Center.
Once the last undergraduate class graduates this month, the campus will offer all undergraduate programs and several continuing education programs.
“We reach out beyond Gwinnett County,” Jan Sandor, assistant vice president for academic affairs at the Gwinnett campus, said. “Students come frocompum far away depending on how badly they want a UGA degree.”
Currently, degree programs focus on three general areas that serve the needs of the community: information technology, business, and the health professions.
Georgia Gwinnett College provides mainly associate and a few bachelor degree programs to lower-division students from Georgia Perimeter students and upper-division students from the university, Southern Polytechnic State University and the Medical College of Georgia.
More than two years ago, the university started its search for a new location for the Gwinnett Campus after the University System of Georgia regents voted in 2005 to have Georgia Gwinnett College replace undergraduate programs when the university offered undergraduates degrees with Perimeter College
The college opened Fall 2006 with 120 juniors. The official dedication of the new Gwinnett Campus is Aug. 27. Prospective students can visit the open house June 12.
