LIVE FROM OMAHA: Bulldog vs. bulldog, underdog vs. underdog

OMAHA, Neb. – Would all the people who predicted the College World Series Championship Series would be a dog-fight between the University of Georgia Bulldogs and the Fresno State Bulldogs, please stand up?

LIAR!!! Anyone standing up is a liar, liar, pants on fire.

Fresno State is the lowest seeded team to ever advance to Omaha period, never mind be in the Championship Series. They are the equivalent of a 13-16 seed advancing to the Final Four, and would all those bracketology majors tell the class how many teams that is?

The correct answer would be zero. In fact, a No. 16 seed has never even won a game in the Big Dance. A majority of those teams get blown out by 20+ points and were just happy to be there.

Georgia on the other hand, while not nearly in the same boat as Fresno, were by no means given a free pass either. In their bracket was the No. 1 national seed Miami, No. 4 Florida State and Stanford.

Miami had only lost nine games all season and had three first round draft picks on its squad, and not to mention the NCAA Freshman of the Year, south-paw Chris Hernandez with an 11-0 record and a 2.16 earned run average.

While few “experts” picked Georgia to advance through its bracket, Georgia was after all, a national seed, so it is not like it would have been a complete shocker.

However, when Fresno first arrived in Omaha, nearly the entire city believed they would be back in NorCal by Wednesday. However, for all those who doubted, the Wonderdogs, they would be in for a surprise.

Unlike the NCAA basketball tournament – which is single elimination – the baseball tournament has multiple double elimination tournaments, with each new round favoring the favorites.

Fresno swept through the Long Beach Regional in three games. It took Georgia five, and it hosted its Regional. Then after being walloped in game one of the Tempe Super Regional by No. 3 Arizona State 12-4 and trailing late in game two, it seemed that the clock was about to strike midnight for Cinderella.

Yet, Fresno scrapped and clawed through injuries and exhaustion to win game two, and came from behind once again, to eliminate Arizona State and advance to Omaha.

Speaking of injuries, did I mention that Fresno had lost its ace, Tanner Scheppers to a stress fracture in his shoulder before the postseason even began.

Fresno is on a run reminiscent of the Colorado Rockies last season when they won 21 of 23 games before being swept by the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. But they are not just a lucky team, they have athletes and they have heart. They have two player with above 80 RBI and one with 90. Georgia doesn’t have any players with 80 RBI.

Fresno was an underdog to the rest of the nation, as they defeated national seed after national seed. But playing that card on David Perno’s bunch won’t fly.

“Fresno is going to have to put down that underdog card,” Perno said. “That’s not going to fly with us. They are a really good baseball team.”

Maybe it takes an underdog to take on another underdog before they realize the underdog card won’t work. Perno certainly has told his guys that Fresno is a capable team, and they have proved it. Teams with national seeds are seeded for a reason, because they deserve it.

Georgia did not start this year even in the top-25, never mind the top-10. They know what their opposition did to get here, and they know what it takes to get here.

Both teams have earned the right to be here, and the fans are in for a treat. As for those who are still seated, it’s OK, we’re al in the same boat. Just sit back and enjoy the show.
