Florida quarterback Tim Tebow may be everyone’s favorite Superman, but Dan LeFevour, Central Michigan’s man behind center, is 60 feet tall.

Since the end of July, LeFevour, a darkhorse Heisman Trophy candidate, has had his own billboard in Detroit. It’s on the back of the scoreboard of Major League Baseball’s Comerica Park, and faces the NFL’s Ford Field. And it has people talking.

“Does he really? That’s awesome,” said Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, a Heisman contender in his own right.

“You’ve gotta put up numbers like that guy (to get a billboard). Didn’t he go for 3,000 (yards passing) and 1,000 (rushing) last year? He’s an unbelievable quarterback.”

To be exact, LeFevour threw for 3,652 yards and 27 touchdowns in 2007, and rushed for another 1,112 and 19 – numbers not all that different from those of a certain Swamp-residing QB.

LeFevour vs. Tebow in ’07

LeFevour

Height: 6 feet, 3 inches
Weight: 229 pounds
Experience: Junior

Passing: 355 for 543, 3,652 yards (65.4 percent), 27 TD
Rushing: 188 rushes for 1,122 yards,19 TD
Totals: 4,774 yards, 46 TD

Tebow

Height: 6 feet, 3 inches
Weight: 240 pounds
Experience: Junior

Passing: 235 for 350, 3,286 yards (66.9 percent), 32 TD
Rushing: 210 rushes for 895 yards, 23 TD
Totals: 4,181 yards, 55 TD

“He’s 6-foot-3, 230. His statistics are really pretty staggering,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said.

“I think if it wasn’t for Tebow doing what he did, which was basically shatter every pass-rush combination there was . everybody would be talking about how amazing what he’s done is. Just the productivity of this guy is amazing.”

The Illinois native already holds CMU career records for passing yards, completions, touchdown passes and total offense, and had 500 more all-purpose yards than Tebow last season.

“Any school that’s going to spend $50,000 on a billboard knows that they have a true Heisman trophy candidate. And he is that,” Richt said.

“This guy is a very very tough football player. He’s got numbers and all that. He’s more like Tebow than I originally thought.”

“Dan LeFevour is a good quarterback. He’s very mobile and a great decision maker,” said linebackers coach John Jancek, who worked as the Chippewas’ defensive coordinator in 2004, the year before LeFevour came to town.

“He’s got a very good arm and he’s accurate. He really makes good decisions when he’s out there. It’s going to be a great challenge for us.”

It’s not quite on the level of Oregon quarterback Joey Harrington’s “Joey Heisman” billboard in Times Square a few years back, but the 60-foot LeFevour is still pretty solid promotion.

“That’s big time,” said cornerback Asher Allen.

“But he deserves it. You see what he does for the team, he has over 1,000 yards rushing and over 3,000 yards passing. I think he needs two billboards really.”
