ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Interception lands lineman on ESPN
Sophomore defensive end Demarcus Dobbs had the highlight of his career in Saturday’s win over Central Michigan. His 78-yard interception return for a touchdown just before halftime turned a promising Chippewa drive into a 28-0 Georgia lead. Here, The Red & Black sits down with Dobbs to talk about that interception, ferrets and his team’s new “Soulja Boy.”
RB: You said Saturday you thought your play was more impressive than Knowshon Moreno’s hurdle, then you make it on ESPN and he doesn’t. Is that a little justification of your statement?
DD: Well, I did think my play was a lot better than Knowshon’s. I looked at The Red & Black and saw his picture on the cover and he rubbed it in my face a little bit. It was an awesome play by him, but I had a lot of calls from friends and family telling me they saw me on ESPN. I think I’m going to forward a little video to him on Facebook from ESPN’s Web site.
RB: How many calls and texts did you get?
DD: I got 80 text messages after the game, and I think I got 20 or 30 more on Sunday. And my phone was actually off so I don’t know how many missed calls I would have had.
RB: You and Knowshon are pretty good friends, right?
DD: Knowshon’s a really good friend, we’re real good friends, we’re best friends. We hit it off our redshirt freshmen year. We lived right down the hall from each other. We actually got two ferrets together, raised them together and everything like that and now he has a little dog. The ferrets are back home at my house. We’re bowling partners, so we bowl a lot together.
RB: What are the ferrets’ names?
DD: We actually named them D-Money and K-Soulja. K-Soulja came about when “Soulja Boy” was actually being played during the games and everything. (Moreno) got a Superman cape from one of the fans so I thought it was only fitting to name it K-Soulja.
RB: Speaking of Soulja Boy, is (Young Jeezy’s) “I Put on for My City” the new version of that? I saw everybody going wild on the sidelines when they played it Saturday.
DD: I know, that kind of surprised me too. I heard it but I was still sitting on the bench trying to catch my breath from the interception so I wasn’t trying to be jumping up and down. I guess that’s our song to get the crowd into the game, get the sideline pumped and everything. I guess that’s going to be the new song for the 2008 season, I don’t know.
RB: Your junk food of choice?
DD: It would definitely be Reese’s or Skittles.
RB: What was on your iPod on the way over to practice today?
DD: On my iPod today I listened to “Whatever You Like” by T.I. That’s my song right now so that’s what I was jamming to on the way to practice.
RB: Who is the quarterback right now in the SEC that you would like to sack the most?
DD: (Florida’s Tim) Tebow. Tebow without a doubt. Without a doubt. It’s a big challenge – he won the Heisman last year . sacking Tebow would bring a lot more confidence to my game, I feel like.
RB: You going to have another 80-yard interception this week?
DD: I don’t know, we’ll see. I’ll try. I’m always trying to run to the ball.
