Georgia News & Notes

By on September 15, 2008

Georgia’s Road Success Under Richt Continues: Since 2001, Georgia is now 26-4 in an opponent’s stadium. With the 14-7 win, Georgia (3-0, 1-0 SEC) leads the all-time series with USC 45-14-2. South Carolina has been Georgia’s first SEC opponent of the season since the Gamecocks joined the SEC in 1992. The Bulldogs are now 12-5 in these games including 6-2 under coach Mark Richt. Overall, the Bulldogs are now 75-19 under Richt including 43-17 in the SEC.

Game-Saving Defensive Plays In the 4th Quarter: Sophomore linebacker Rennie Curran hit South Carolina’s Mike Davis on the 1-yard line and caused a fumble that was recovered by junior Asher Allen in the end zone. Sophomore safety Reshad Jones’ third career interception ended USC’s last rally attempt to clinch the victory. Opponents are just 4-for-9 in scoring attempts in the red zone against the Bulldogs. On the other hand, the Georgia offense is 10-for-10 in red zone trips with 9 TDs and one field goal.

Defense: In Georgia’s first three games this year, the Bulldogs have surrendered just 14 points in the first half. Today, South Carolina scored one TD in the first half and was blanked in the second half. USC was limited to 81 total yards on offense in the opening half. The Bulldog defense has recorded seven scoreless quarters in the first three games. Junior defensive lineman Kade Weston and linebacker Darius Dewberry both returned to action for the first time this year against South Carolina. The Gamecocks have only scored two TDs in the past 12 quarters against Georgia. The Gamecocks tallied just 18 yards rushing on 16 attempts the lowest by any SEC team against Georgia under Coach Richt. It was the lowest tally by a squad since #10 Hawaii managed just minus 5 yards in the 2008 Sugar Bowl

Stafford Leads Team To Another Win: Junior QB Matthew Stafford improved to 20-4 as a starter (15-for-25, 146 yards). He was 10-for-17 with 106 yards in the first half. Stafford connected on a two-point conversion to junior split end Kris Durham in the third quarter. This was the first two-point conversion for the Bulldogs since Stafford hit senior flanker Kenneth Harris against Georgia Tech in 2007. Georgia is 5-for-7 in two-point conversions in the Mark Richt era. Stafford leads the Bulldogs with 22 consecutive games started.

Moreno Carries The Load: Sophomore Knowshon Moreno had 20 carries for 79 yards and 1 TD plus had two catches for 13 yards and one punt return for 32 yards. Moreno’s touchdown in the third quarter was the Bulldogs’ first TD against the Gamecocks in eight quarters dating back to 2006. However, Georgia’s defense has limited South Carolina to just two touchdowns in the past three meetings!

Walsh Puts It Through/Mimbs Booms One Too: Freshman Blair Walsh connected on two field goals during the third collegiate game of his career. Walsh had a 42 yarder and a 23 yarder to give the Bulldogs all of their six points in the first half. His 23 yarder marked the first time Georgia did not score a TD in nine trips to the red zone. Junior P Brian Mimbs boomed a career-long 77-yard punt with 6:23 left in the fourth quarter. It tied for the seventh longest in school history (Zeke Bratkowski 77-yarder vs. Auburn in 1951) and was the longest since 1973 when Don Golden punted an 80-yarder against Kentucky.

Green Has Career Day: Freshman flanker A.J. Green had a career-long 39-yard catch to set up Georgia’s second field goal. He finished with a career-high 61 yards on three catches. Senior Mohamed Massaquoi (2-for-17 yards) has now caught a pass in 24 straight games.

Kicking Firsts: Redshirt freshman Drew Butler recorded his first career punt (a 38 yarder) in the first quarter. Freshman Jamie Lindley had his first career kickoff in the third quarter. Lindley marks the 11th true freshman to play for the Bulldogs this season.

Injury Report: Senior split end Kenneth Harris (ankle) and junior defensive end Rod Battle (neck) did not make the trip.

Up Next: The No. 2 Bulldogs (3-0, 1-0 SEC) travel to Tempe, Ariz., to face No. 15 Arizona State (2-0) on Saturday, Sept 20 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. This will be the first meeting between the Bulldogs and the Sun Devils.
