Cine shows cult classic
Cine was transformed into a scene of pure horror last Friday night and the celebration of transvestites, transsexuals and the time warp will continue weekly through October.
A cult classic since the 70s, Rocky Horror Picture Show was added to Cine’s weekly events as a way to “get people into the theatre who wouldn’t ordinarily come in,” according to event organizer Lindsay Nicols.
“Rocky Horror has proven to guarantee a crowd and a good time,” Nicols, a fifth-year speech communications major from Rome, said. “Its really a unique experience that no movie has yet to rival for me.”
ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW
What: Rocky Horror Picture Show
When: Friday Nights at Midnight
Where: Cine
Price: $5
This “unique experience” was created during the screening by incorporating props and encouraging avid audience participation which ranged from singing along to dancing and using props to play along with what is happening in the film.
“Seeing the crowd get into the song and dance numbers is great,” Nicols said. “Costumes are welcome and increase your chance of winning the costume competition and generally anything goes.”
To help aid newcomers into the rituals of Rocky Horror, the screening and audience participation is lead by two seasoned audience members who help cue viewers when certain props are used and “initiate” them into Rocky Horror.
“If its your first time it may hurt a bit and be some blood but we will try to ease you into it,” Chris Weaver, one of the screening leaders and University employee from Atlanta, said. “The more you participate the more fun you have.”
However, the initiation that took place last Friday was completely blood-free and simply consisted of the Rocky Horror “virgins” being brought to the front of the room and asked to turn around and stretch to touch their toes.
This initiation only proved problematic for a few of the girls who came dressed up for the film in above the knee skirts and fishnets. But, it did not seem to damper their enjoyment of their first Rocky Horror screening.
“It is just awesome,” Lindsay Sturm, a 20-year-old psychology major Junior from Long Island, said. “I am kind of obsessed with the movie and it was just so fun.”
