T-Pain, with some mime help, performed at Legion Field Wednesday night to a sold-out crowd.

Multi-platinum artist, T-Pain performed to a sold out crowd Wednesday night at Legion field. The Entertainment, Homecoming, and Committee for Black Cultural Programming divisions of University Union hosted the free concert.

Danielle Davis, coordinator of CBCP, said all 4,200 tickets were gone at noon on Wednesday.

With two mime dancers, backing him up, T-Pain performed hits like “Bartender” and “Buy You a Drank,” along with some of his most famous collaborations, such as Lil Wayne’s “Got Money” or 2 Pistols’ “She Got It.”

He brought his new solo artist, Tay Dizm, from his Nappy Boy record label to perform his new song, “Beam Me Up.”

I was able to ask a few questions to the tired, but upbeat performer after the concert.

R&B: Have you ever been to Athens before?

T-Pain: Once

R&B: When was that?

T-Pain: A very long time ago [laughing]; back in the day . . .

R&B: Are you into UGA football?

T-Pain: Nah. [Laughing] The football players going to love that.

R&B: What do you do to prepare for big performances like this?

T-Pain: Wake-up probably. Get some rest. You know, not much.

R&B: Ah-right then. Lets talk about you new album. What’s the feel of 3 RINGZ? I know with your last album focused on change and reinventing [yourself]. What are you trying to accomplish with this one?

T-Pain: It’s [about] just having fun on this album. It’s something you can chill out too and have fun. You play fight music when you get ready to fight. You play this one before you get ready to go to the club or in your car. When you get to the club, they’ll be playing it anyway. It’s just something you can have fun [with].

R&B: You’ve worked with a lot of artists. I saw on your new album there are many guest appearances. Is there anybody you’re interested in working with that you haven’t already collaborated with?

T-Pain: I’m pretty much done. I think I worked with everyone I wanted too. Yeah [laughs], there’s a lot [on the album].

R&B: Now with your vocoder, it’s a trend now across music [genres]. Different artists now used it. Will this still be a trademark for you as your career progresses?

T-Pain: Can’t nobody beat the originator. Teddy Riley can’t do it better than Roger Troutman. I can’t do it better than Teddy Riley. I’m going to make sure no one can do it better than me. That’s how it’s going to be.

R&B: What other hip-artists do you admire right now?

T-Pain: Right now? Umm, Soulja Boy. I like what he does.

R&B: Souja Boy, that’s interesting. What other stuff do you have on your iPod or you are listening to at the moment.

T-Pain: I don’t have nothing on my iPod.

R&B: Really?

T-Pain: I try not to, especially when I’m recording an album. I’ll start sounding like other people [because] I’m listening too much. I’ll start doing impersonations, and I don’t want to do that.

R&B: I see you’re involved in politics. I saw you talking about [voting] and Obama on stage. Have you always been or is it just this year in particular?

T-Pain: [Wobbling his hand back and forth]. Not really though. As you get more into the industry, the more politics comes towards you. Once you get asked the politics question a couple of times, you kind of need to know what your talking about. You don’t want to keep being asked the question. So I read up on some things to be in the know. As I grew with my popularity, I started reading up on politics more.

R&B: Are you registered to vote in Florida?

T-Pain: Yeah, but actually in Georgia.

R&B: Are there any other pro or college football teams you like?

T-Pain: [shaking his head]

R&B: You don’t look at sports at all? I read on the internet you were a sports guy.

T-Pain: Nah. They think all guys are sports guys. I don’t have the time to look at sports. I don’t have the time or energy. I stay in the pocket [laughs]. That’s about all the sports I got going; staying in that pocket.

Even though the Tallahassee, FL native isn’t into sports. He did challenge everyone to a game of Guitar Hero after the show.

T-Pain releases his new album, Thr33 Ringz, on November 11th with guest appearances from Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, Ciara, DJ Khaled, and Kanye West.
