Soccer’s senior night to be broadcast live on national television

On any given night the Georgia soccer team draws some of the largest, most boisterous crowds in the Southeastern Conference. Now imagine that atmosphere on senior night and national television.
That atmosphere will be reality tonight when the Bulldogs (7-8-1, 5-2-1 SEC) celebrate senior night against Auburn (8-7-2, 4-3-1) live on Fox Soccer Channel.
“It’s a great atmosphere to play in,” senior defender Megan Tomlinson said. “It’s a big night for our team and the seniors, and I think it’s going to be real exciting.”
Georgia’s four seniors – Tomlinson, defender Kristin Garman, goalkeeper Courtney Cripps and forward Ashley Stinson – will be recognized before the game and start for the Bulldogs.
“They’ve added a great deal [to the program],” head coach Patrick Baker said. “They deserve the opportunity on senior night to start and walk out on that field one last time and hear their names announced.”
The contributions of the four seniors will be celebrated tonight, but it is clear that they want a win more than recognition.
“I don’t really think of it as my last home game,” Garman said. “I just think of it as another game against Auburn. So hopefully we can just get the win. That’s what I want the most.”
The game, which begins at 8 p.m., will allow Georgia to showcase its program and fan support on the nation’s premier soccer-dedicated television station.
“It’s also Fox Soccer, which .any soccer fan across the country, male or female, is going to watch,” Baker said. “So we’ve really tried to promote it. One of the great reasons they wanted to come back is because of the great fan support we had last year.”
However, it is important that the Bulldogs do not let the pomp and circumstance distract them from their one true aim – beating the Auburn Tigers.
The Bulldogs have won the last three meetings between the two schools, but Auburn has provided a stiff challenge. The last three meetings have seen Georgia prevail by a one-goal margin, including 3-2 wins the last two years.
The Bulldogs’ backline needs to keep a close eye on the Auburn offense, which has proven to be one of the most dynamic in the SEC. The Tigers have registered 15 goals during conference play, which is third most in the SEC.
“They’re a traditional 4-3-3 team, and we’ve gotta do a really good job of containing their three front [forwards] because individually any one of those three can hurt you by themselves,” Baker said. “And saying that, they’re also very good as a group.”
The Bulldogs need to keep close tabs on freshman midfielder Katy Frierson, who has eight goals on the season and is tied for third most in the conference.
The Bulldogs have won four straight games, are second in the SEC’s Eastern Division and third overall in the conference.
With a win against Auburn, Georgia would move back up to .500 and be well on its way to reaching the NCAA tournament.
“The new [Ratings Percentage Index] came out, and we’re 35th in the country,” Baker said. “The NCAA is going to take the top 34, at large. We’re right in the mix.”
