OUR SPACE: campus organizations move into Tate offices

More than 50 student organizations began moving into their new offices in the Tate Student Center on Monday, providing many with working space that was not previously available.
“[Tate has] all these really great resources so we wanted them to have the space where they could focus on their organization,” Megan Janasiewicz, the program advisor for the Department of Campus Life, said.
Janasiewicz emphasized the importance of students actually using the space and the services Tate has to offer.
“Our only concern is that we don’t want this to just be storage space,” she said. “We want students to use the desks and to be here and be a part of the community we’re starting here.”
As a result of efforts to expand Tate, many new offices, cubicles and storage space have been created on the bottom floor to help student organizations conduct business.
The office space gives direct access to printing and copying, mailboxes and lounge space. The new layout also allows student organizations the ability communicate and collaborate with other organizations in the area.
For campus organizations, this is the first time office space has been available to them. UGA HERO, which supports children with HIV/AIDS, held meetings at members’ houses or in different rooms in the Miller Learning Center. With the addition of the new offices, UGA HERO now has cubicle space.
“I’m very excited just to have a physical resource on campus for students to use,” Chase Mouchet, director of operations, said.
Members of the University Union, the student programming board for the University, received a smaller working space in Tate than before construction but remain optimistic about the new facilities.
“If there are any negatives, there would only be one negative and that would be having a small office,” Matt Slotten, president of the University Union, said. He reaffirmed his belief that “the positives far outweigh the negatives.”
Beginning next year, all student organizations that want a cubicle and storage space in Tate must apply to the Department of Campus Life in April.
