Streak ends, Dogs come up short against Tech
The streak is over.
After winning seven straight over Georgia Tech (9-3), Georgia (9-3) allowed 409 rushing yards in the Yellow Jackets 45-42 win over the Bulldogs Saturday.
Roddy Jones led the way for Georgia Tech, running wild for 214 yards and two touchdowns on only 13 carries.
All day Georgia had problems stopping the run on what was a cold, wet and windy afternoon in Athens.
“We told them to hang in there for 60 minutes and what a 60 minutes it was,” Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson said.
While Georgia Tech rushed with perfection in the second half, Georgia looked to be in control heading into the third quarter.
Georgia was up 28-12 at halftime but B-back Jonathan Dwyer took a pitch from Tech quarterback Josh Nesbitt 60 yards downfield for a touchdown.
Tech converted a two-point conversion to cut Georgia’s lead to 28-20. On Tech’s next possession Jones scored an 8-yard touchdown. The Yellow Jackets converted the two-point try to tie the game at 28-all.
“At halftime, coach told us to get back to basics and told us Georgia wasn’t doing anything we haven’t seen before,” Jones said. “It is a big win for us and now we need to get ready for the bowl game.”
In the third quarter Tech scored 23 points in the opening seven minutes to accompany scoring what were 26 unanswered after halftime en route to its win.
“It was a lack of execution on our part and excellent execution on their part,” Georgia head coach Mark Richt said. “A couple of times we squeezed them to within six inches of the sideline and they were able to stay in bounds. We fought back to within three twice and kept battling away but it was just not enough at the end.”
Tech rushed the ball 54 times and only attempted six passes. Nesbitt only completed one of those passes which went for 19 yards.
While Georgia couldn’t stop Tech’s ground game, the Yellow Jackets could not contain Georgia’s offense. Quarterback Matthew Stafford threw for 407 yards and five touchdowns, three of which went to receiver Mohamed Massaquoi – who totaled 180 receiving yards.
“You can throw all the stats away in this game,” Massaquoi said. “At the end of the day they got the victory. We are going to go back and look at film and we will definitely have this in the back of our mind.”
