Local woman celebrates career, 111th birthday

More than a century ago, America’s longest practicing doctor and the 56th oldest person in the world was born in Portal, Ga. Sunday, she will celebrate her 111th birthday.

Dr. Leila Denmark, who now resides in Athens with her daughter, helped develop a vaccine for the whooping cough and was a practicing pediatrician for 73 years.

Former camp counselor Brett Dennen has come a long way from being the opening act for s’mores and ghost stories to headlining his own nationwide tour.

“It should be a pretty mellow show, but there will definitely be some high energy parts because the entire point of the new album is to talk about some difficult things that are in the world but to always be hopeful about them,” he said.

New coach, same result for Georgia

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Georgia men’s basketball team may have had a new head coach on the sidelines, but the game ended with the same old results as Alabama defeated Georgia 75-70 at Coleman Coliseum in Tuscaloosa, Ala., Saturday night.

The Dogs (9-12, 0-6 SEC) were again mired by turnovers as they committed 20 for the game and lost their eighth game in a row this year and first since the dismissal of Dennis Felton as head coach on Thursday.

Men’s tennis advances to ITA Team Indoors

Once Josh Varela’s racket landed on the other side of the tennis court, it was official.

The Georgia men’s tennis team earned a berth to Chicago to play in the ITA Team Indoors Championship.

Varela clinched the match for the Bulldogs over Washington on Saturday 4-2 in the ITA Kickoff Weekend regional final.

“I kind of pulled my [abdominal] muscle about a week ago,” said Jamie Hunt. “I kind of felt it before the match a little bit and I didn’t want to hurt it anymore.

Saying that Dennis Felton entered this basketball season on the hot seat might be the understatement of the century.

Were it not for what Athletic Director Damon Evans called a “miraculous run” through the SEC Tournament last season, Felton seemed destined to be fired.
