Budget cuts restrict skate park operation

After years of struggling to build a place that they can call home, Athens skateboarders will be spending less time in their concrete sanctuary as budget cuts hack away at the park’s operation hours.

The Skate Park of Athens on Lexington Road within the East Athens Community Park has had to reduce hours as a result of budget cuts from local government.

Lightning ends women’s soccer game in a draw

It was a weekend of ups, downs and plenty of rainfall for the No. 16 Georgia soccer team, whose match against unranked Mercer abruptly ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday afternoon.

The match, which kicked off just past 1 p.m. at UGA’s Turner Soccer Complex, was cut short with nine minutes left in regulation after lightning was spotted in the area.

The opening weekend of the 2009 Georgia volleyball season ended on a much higher note than it began.

Following a heartbreaking five-set loss to rival Georgia Tech (3-0) on Friday night, the Bulldogs (2-1) posted consecutive sweeps of Mercer (0-3) and Austin Peay (1-2) on Saturday to salvage their weekend trip to Atlanta.

After almost a month of a grueling fall camp, Georgia football now has a very specific and very near goal to focus on – Sept. 5 and No. 11 Oklahoma State.

“The countdown has been going on for quite some time, but once it gets down to a week’s time, you think one week from today, where will I be?” said head coach Mark Richt after Saturday’s practice.

Headline takes away from column I have worked with Samantha for about three semesters now and have been a guest lecturer in her classes. I wanted to commend her on the best Sex in the Classic City column I feel she has ever written. I do not know if she chose the headline or not – and whether it was meant to grab attention or not – but my concern is over the message it conveys.

One of my all-time favorite movies is “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and there’s a great quote that Ferris uses to justify his day off which has always stuck with me. “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.
