UGA police setting up safety checkpoints
Two driver safety checkpoints will be conducted today by the University and Athens-Clarke County Police departments.
“They will be on or around campus,” said University Police Lt. Eric Dellinger. “Usually we’ll do one relatively close to home and another in an area [ACC police are] concerned about.”
At the checkpoints, police officers will stop vehicles to ensure drivers are complying with all ACC laws.
The time and location of the checkpoints have yet to be disclosed to ACC residents.
“It’s an ongoing effort to improve safe driving practices,” Dellinger said.
Checkpoints on St. Patrick’s Day this year resulted in 63 arrests out of 700 cars stopped – 19 of the people arrested were University students or faculty.
Vehicle safety and sobriety checkpoints held on May 5 at River Road and on East Campus and Cedar Streets yielded three DUI arrests.
University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said road safety is his first concern, and he considers checkpoints successful even if there are no arrests.
“If we stopped arresting for DUIs, I’m OK with that,” Williamson said. “We’re not going out of business.”
