Delta Sigma Pi hosts ’90s fundraiser for Relay for Life at Barcode

By on November 17, 2009

This generation of college students largely grew up in the ’90s. The 18-22 demographic set the soundtrack of their early lives – middle school, making friends, braces, figuring out the opposite sex, bad haircuts, awkward glasses – to Blink 182, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Weezer. Tonight at Barcode is a celebration of that magical era all the while supporting Relay For Life.

UGA Relay is historically one of the biggest and most successful teams in the country, but right now the University is sitting in the number one spot. Jessica Craven, a marketing and advertising major involved with Relay, said they are really excited about this fact.

“Virginia Tech is typically the best, but we’ve raised the most money so far this year – we already have 102 teams and it’s only November,” Craven said.

Relay for Life is the big yearly fundraiser of the American Cancer Society. Their mission is to celebrate and remember cancer victims as well as fight back against the disease. Although the relay part of Relay for Life is not until April 23rd, teams raise money throughout the year. Every dollar raised goes to cancer research.

Many people involved with Relay for Life have a personal connection with the disease. For Craven, it was the death of her grandfather from cancer many years ago.

“Ever since then,” Craven said, “it’s been personal to me to find a cure to cancer. I want this disease to be gone if it can be.”

The concert is being held by Delta Sigma Pi, Terry College’s Professional Business Fraternity. DSP is one of the 102 Relay teams UGA already has this year. All proceeds tonight go to UGA Relay for Life.

Welcome to Buckhead, formerly known as Up to Here, is the musical entertainment for the evening. They are performing all ’90s covers. Taylor Bleke, lead guitarist of the band, expects it to be a crazy night.

“We’re doing about 30 90′s songs, everything from Third Eye Blind to Kristinia DeBarge’s ‘Goodbye.’ We tried to pick eclectic songs, but ones that people know,” Bleke said. “More people love 90′s music than they realize. This is our generation.”

DSP’s Relay Team requests everyone attending to dress in their finest 90s attire. Think Saved by the Bell or Ninja Turtles.

Wristbands can be purchased in advance and allow for a discount on drinks. Patrons must be 18 or older can attend and 21 or older to drink.
