University Police are actively investigating the alleged Sunday morning beating of a Clemson University student in the Chi Phi fraternity house basement using traffic camera footage and witness interviews, police told The Red & Black Tuesday.
University Police Chief Jimmy Williamson said the complainant, who police found injured and incoherent outside the house at 3:22 a.m. Sunday, is still deciding whether to press charges against the only suspect, an on-and-off University student unaffiliated with the fraternity.
Williamson said the complainant’s health is not in danger.
Patrick Richardson, Chi Phi president, declined to comment but issued a statement saying his fraternity is offering full cooperation with police.
Wesley Fugate, adviser to the Interfraternity Council, said in his two years as adviser, Chi Phi hasn’t had any major issues, but his office is still taking the complaints seriously.
“While this matter does not appear to involve any members of the UGA Greek community, because it is alleged to have occurred on chapter premises, we are certainly looking into the situation,” he said in an e-mail interview Tuesday. “We are confident that the situation is being fully investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”
