Diamond Dogs ink three recruits for 2010 season
The national early signing period that began Nov. 11 officially ended Wednesday, and the Diamond Dogs inked three prospects on the last day.
Pitchers Taylor Hicks and Joe Robinson, along with first baseman/outfielder Austin Wheeler, have all signed on with Georgia for next season, according to head coach David Perno.
Hicks is from North Oconee High School just down the road in Watkinsville. He competed for Team Georgia during the summer, helping lead them to a national championship.
Robinson is playing at the College of Southern Nevada, where last season he posted a team best 1.99 ERA while going 6-2. He earned first team All-Conference.
Wheeler, a senior from Parkview High School in Lilburn, batted .409 with seven home runs and 36 RBI his junior season.
Gymdogs snag two top recruits
First-year Gymdog frontman Jay Clarke announced Wednesday the signing of Kaylan Earls and Cat Hires, two gymnasts coveted by the Gymdogs.
Earls hails from Chicago and is an exceptional junior gymnast. Earlier this season, Earls won her second straight all-around title and finished first on the beam and bars.
Not to be outdone, Hires won the bars title at the 2008 Junior Olympic National Championships and finished third on vault. The Tampa, Fla., native also won the all-around at the state championships last year.
Volleyball lands outside hitter
The Georgia volleyball team has received a national letter of intent from 6-foot-2 outside hitter Brittany Northcutt of Greensboro, N.C., head coach Joel McCartney announced Wednesday.
Northcutt was a member of the 2008-09 USA High Performance A2 program, leading them to a gold medal at the 2009 High Performance Championships.
Women’s golf inks two
The women’s golf team has two new commitments in Sarah Almond and Amelia Hill. Almond is from Albemarle, N.C., and Hill will be coming to Athens from St. Simons.
Almond qualified as a 16-year-old for 2008 U.S. Women’s Open and Hill has helped Frederica Academy secure back-to-back Georgia GISA AA state championships.
