CALL OF DUTY: MODERN WARFARE 2

Among the range of human experiences, warfare is so unique that those of us who have not lived through its peaks and valleys cannot hope to understand it. At the same time, warfare is such a universal part of the human condition that artists have attempted to portray it since the beginning of art itself.

More recently, video games have featured war as their central themes and have traditionally fallen far short of accurately displaying what war is like.

However, from its very first mission, “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2″ comes closer to approximating the experience of war than any video game has before. The immersive single-player campaign captures a significant amount of the uncertainty, chaos and fear of war, although any video game with a reset button can’t ever truly approximate warfare. The campaign combines this engrossing gameplay with brilliantly-designed levels and a story better than many a “James Bond” movie.

“Modern Warfare 2″ introduces a Special Ops mode to the series, which features shorter missions designed for co-op play. This feature will surely satisfy gamers as they try to beat every last mission.

Multiplayer in the “Call of Duty” series has become among the more popular options for multiplayer gamers, and “Modern Warfare 2″ doesn’t disappoint.

With several new maps and a host of new features, the multiplayer feature expands and improves upon what was already a great multiplayer experience.

In terms of gameplay, “Modern Warfare 2″ doesn’t break any significant new ground. Instead, it builds upon the achievements of many games before it – and sometimes, that’s all you need for a truly great video game.

VERDICT: The word for “Modern Warfare 2″ is “intense.” If you like first-person shooters to any degree, buy this game. It’s a serious contender for game of the year.
