Lady Bulldogs knock off Alabama State 75-48

By on November 25, 2009

Jasmine James put up 17 points and three other players joined the freshman in double figures as the Georgia women’s basketball team defeated Alabama State by a score of 75-48 Wednesday evening at Stegeman Coliseum.

The 75-point effort is Georgia’s highest output of the season as the Lady Bulldogs improve to 4-0. Behind James, Ashley Houts and Anne Marie Armstrong each posted 13 points while Porsha Phillips poured in 11 in a balanced overall performance.

“I was hopeful that we’d be able to do that,” Landers said. “I was concerned about playing without Angel [Robinson], who is our best rebounder. It also meant three of our four post players were freshmen, so I was concerned. But all nine players did enough to help our basketball team play reasonably well.”

Georgia got things going early by running out to a 15-2 lead with just 4:11 gone by in the first half. That stretch included a 12-0 Lady Bulldog run following Alabama State’s first basket of the evening and the Lady Dogs never looked back.

Alabama State pulled it to within six with 8:32 remaining in the opening stanza, but Georgia responded with the next four points to reestablish the double-digit lead.

A lay-up from Jaleesa Rhoden and four straight free throws by James put the Lady Bulldogs up by the half’s largest margin of 17, at 36-19, with 54 seconds on the clock. UGA would enter the locker room up 16 at 37-21, with James posting 10 points through the first 20 minutes to lead all scorers.

A 3-pointer from Meredith Mitchell five minutes into the second frame gave Georgia a 20-point lead. A trey from James with the clock reading 9:36 made it 58-36 before Houts netted the game’s next six to extend the lead. The Lady Bulldogs used an eventual 16-0 run up until the 4:56 mark in the second to increase the advantage to 71-39.

A 3-pointer from ASU’s Quortni Fambro broke the Georgia streak and was the first bucket for the Lady Hornets in nearly five minutes. Armstrong then converted on her third three of the evening with 2:28 to play before Alabama State scored the last six of the game to bring it to 75-48 at the whistle.

Armstrong’s 13 points was a career high for the freshman and the first double-digit effort of her short career. James added six rebounds and five assists to her line while Houts added six assists and three steals. Mitchell posted six steals.

Alabama State was led by Tanika Jackson’s 10 points as she was the only player in double digits. Georgia forced ASU into 28 turnovers.

“I was pleased with our defense for the most part, especially our full-court press,” Landers added. “Our team has a good sense of how to cover the floor. We’re still working on our post defense. We’ve got to get more aggressive and be more intense.”

Georgia is now 2-0 all-time against the Lady Hornets after winning the inaugural meeting, 85-25, to open the 2008-09 campaign 375 days ago.

Houts’ five free throws pushed her into seventh place all-time in Georgia history for career free throws made, while she also used five free throw attempts to move into sole possession of No. 10 all-time in that category.

Robinson – who had to be hospitalized after hitting her head in the Rutgers game last Sunday – did not play this evening. In her place, freshman Jasmine Hassell got the call, making her the 64th rookie to start for the Lady Dogs during Landers’ 31 seasons at Georgia.

Georgia is now set for the Lady Eagle Classic in Hattiesburg, Miss., where it will first square off against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Friday at 8 p.m. EST. The Lady Dogs will then meet either Southern Mississippi or Jackson State on Saturday.
