HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Jasmine James scored 24 points to lead the No. 14-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs (6-0) to an 84-55 victory over Southern Miss (3-3) in the championship game of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic here on Saturday night.

Ashley Houts was tabbed the tournament’s Most Valuable Player after scoring 17 points, dishing out four assists and grabbing six steals. James, a freshman from Memphis, Tenn., also earned a spot on the all-tournament team and has now led Georgia in scoring in five of six games this season.

“We played four pretty solid halves of basketball here, especially when you consider it’s the third game in four days,” head coach Andy Landers said.

Anne Marie Armstrong scored 14 points, nine of those in the first half as the Lady Bulldogs took control, and Porsha Phillips chipped in 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds.

A three from Houts opened the game’s scoring and Armstrong followed by a second triple, James converted on an old-fashioned three-point play and Armstrong and Phillips added additional jumpers as the Lady Bulldogs opened up a 13-2 lead less than five minutes into the contest.

Southern Miss pulled within six at 29-23 on a 25-foot three-pointer by Pauline Love with 5:44 remaining in the half, but a Phillips turnaround sparked an 8-0 surge that gave Georgia its largest lead of the half at 37-23.

The Lady Bulldogs will play their fourth game in seven days when they host UAB on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum.
