Bulldog swimmers, divers sweep Tennessee
The Georgia swimming and diving teams swept their counterparts from Tennessee on Saturday at Gabrielsen Natatorium.
The Bulldogs posted a 152-148 victory in a meet that was tied with two races remaining, while the Lady Bulldogs coasted to a 189-111 decision.
“Today was a lot of fun,” Georgia head coach Jack Bauerle said. “I am really proud of the guys. They did a great job. The ladies were good too. We have some places where we need to be better. But the streak continues, which is neat, and we’ve got one more meet to try to continue that with South Carolina and Alabama. Overall, it was a job well done today.”
The Lady Bulldogs opened the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay. The team of Kristen Shickora, Kelly McNichols, Lisa Caprioglio and Anne-Marie Botek touched in 1:40.30. Wendy Trott won the 500-yard freestyle in 4:47.12 and the 1,000-yard freestyle with a time of 9:46.65. Caprioglio posted the top time in the 100-yard butterfly, touching in 54.39, and won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:02.12.
Hannah Moore won the 1-meter springboard with 280.79 points and 3-meter springboard with 338.48 points. Morgan Scroggy took the 200-yard freestyle in 1:47.90. The 200-yard butterfly went to Adrienne Bicek, who posted a time of 1:58.21. Georgia capped the meet as Megan Romano, Erica Malagón, Chelsea Nauta and Allison Schmitt won the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:21.11.
Troyden Prinsloo took the 500-yard freestyle in 4:30.12 and the 1,000-yard freestyle in 9:10.25. Mark Dylla was the top finisher in the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 48.06 and the 200-yard butterfly, touching in 1:46.48. Craig Jennings took the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 20.27. Matt Bartlett won the 100-yard freestyle in 44.72. Martin Kata took the 200-yard individual medley in 1:48.11.
“We have been working hard since we got back from Christmas and really haven’t taken a break yet, so for them to do what they did today I thought was really good,” Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said. “Hannah was pretty solid today. I am really happy with how she did on the 3-meter with her reverse two and a half. Owen (Blank) did a great job on 3-meter. He threw a new dive today for the first time ever in a meet. Alex (Watson) just keeps getting better and better, and Tim (Barrett) had his highest 3-meter score of the year. We stepped it up and I challenged them a little bit on 3-meter, and they came out and helped our team win this meet so that was exciting.”
The Lady Bulldogs extended their home winning streak to 69 straight and improved to 70-1 all-time at Gabrielsen Natatorium with the victory.
The Georgia swimming and diving teams will entertain South Carolina and Alabama next Saturday in the home finale.
