Notebook: Georgia men’s basketball vs. Tennessee

By on January 23, 2010

* UGA hasn’t beaten Tennessee in 10 tries.

* Tennessee leads the conference (3rd nationally) in turnover margin.  Georgia is last in the conference in the same statistic.  Georgia’s ability to control turnovers will play a crucial role in the outcome of this game.

* Georgia has had a week off.  Will the rest for their starters give them the edge in this game? 2nd road game in a row for Tenn.

1st HALF

* First time Stegeman Coliseum has been full all season; although, there are still some empty seats scattered throughout the lower bowl.  Lots of Volunteer fans in attendance, especially in the upper bowl.

* Georgia knocking down jumpers early.  Big time shots by McPhee, Leslie, and Thompkins to give the Dogs a 10-4 advantage.  Crowd is really into it today early.

* Building is electric right now.  Dogs up 14-4 after two monster slams: one by Travis Leslie on a fast break and the other by Jeremy Price in the halfcourt sets.  Leslie’s was particularly crowd pleasing, swooping under the rim for an over the head dunk.

* 4 straight dunks for Georgia to go up 18-8.

* Georgia up 13. Travis Leslie and Jeremy Price have really played well thus far.  Fox getting some minutes out of the bench early in the first half, too, to give his starters some rest for the second half.

* Ebuka Anyaorah has been aggressive thus far and looks to have taken over Zlovaric’s minutes at small forward behind Leslie.

* Georgia running away from Tenn. Five straight points by Thompkins to put Georgia up 19 at 36-17, and the latest run has come with Leslie on the bench.

* Chism back on the floor, and Scotty Hopson hits a deep three, despite great defense from Travis Leslie.

* Its only a matter of time until Tennessee hits back with a run of their own. Will Georgia be able to hold on when they do? They haven’t been able to so far in league play this year, but they are fresh off after a week break from action. And Fox has done a nice job of limiting the starter’s minutes in the first half, as Chris Barnes, Price, Vincent Williams, and Anyaorah have all seen more minutes than they are accustomed to in the first half.

* Really balanced scoring effort from the Dogs so far.  Thompkins has 14, McPhee with 9 , and Leslie with 8.  Georgia shooting 63.6 percent on the game thus far.

2ND HALF

* Tenn came back early to start the second half, but Georgia has responded recently with a huge three by Dustin Ware and and-1 bucket by Leslie to go up 18 again.

* Extremely surprised Tennessee hasn’t run a full-court trap. They’ve played their man defense full court, but they’ve dropped it back as soon as the ball gets inbounds.

* He isn’t going to win it, but at this point, Mark Fox has to seriously be in the running for SEC Coach of the Year.  The job he has done is tremendous.

* Looks like Georgia will take the win away in this one, as they’ve absolutely demolished Tennessee on this occasion.  Definitely the win Fox needed to help boost fan interest in the program and to prove to recruits from the state that they don’t have to continue to go to Tennessee.
