Black Belt Patriots offering up free CDs (w/MP3)

By on February 4, 2010

Tasty World will experience a flash flood of albums and alcohol tonight as the Black Belt Patriots release a new record and bust out the brew in celebration.

“At our show there will be free CDs and all-you-can-drink beer. I never said the beer was free,” Hampton Vernon, drummer and vocalist of the Black Belt Patriots, said.

Black Belt Patriots consists of three University students who all met while playing together with another band a few years back.

Black Belt Patriots will be giving away free copies of their self-titled, newly-recorded album at their show tonight at Tasty World.

“We were the backing band for one of our friends,” Vernon said.

The fraternity brothers continued playing music together as part of that backing band and eventually decided to form their own group in 2008.

But that is one of the few things that all three members agree on.

“I never know exactly how to classify our sound, since ‘alternative rock’ is such a huge genre,” Vernon said. “We are like Bowie covering Nirvana.”

They resoundingly claimed that the Foo Fighters are a huge influence, but besides that, according to Vernon, all three members have very different tastes in music.

Black Belt Patriots have played many shows around Athens and the surrounding area for the past year and a half.

“Once [at Auburn] we were asked to put the drummer in the closet and me in the kitchen,” bassist Davis Popper said. “We turned on the fog machine and the entire audience started frantically dry heaving.”

The band has played many fraternity parties both at the University and at Auburn, but they are hoping to broaden their scope.

“We want to start playing more shows at downtown venues,” Vernon said.

Since their formation, the band has been writing songs and working on creating their self-titled album.

“We have been writing originals over the course of a year and a half now,”  Popper said.

The album was recorded at Last House Studios in Athens with help from Davis Causey.

Everyone in attendance at the show will receive a copy of the CD.

“We might be breaking even on what it cost us to make the album,” Vernon said about giving away free copies of the album. “But we want to get our music out there, so for us giving a free CD at the show is well worth it.”

The band is hoping that their album release show will be a fun experience for all.

“We want to turn the entire upstairs of Tasty World into a backstage,” guitarist and vocalist Ben Lewis said.

Typically, a Black Belt Patriots show will consist of a mix of originals and covers.

“We like to turn hip hop into alternative jams,” said Lewis. “R. Kelly’s ‘Ignition’ is a big hit.”

They strive to be a band that everyone can listen to and enjoy and try to entertain the audience at all costs.

“Sometimes I do a little bit of stand-up comedy,” Popper said. “It’s a real crowd pleaser.”

After graduation in 2011, the band plans to spend a year playing music and traveling.

“If anything comes of [playing music] that year, we will act on it and go from there,” Lewis said.

“We are aware that it is hard to make it since there are so many amazing bands out there who want the same thing we do.”

Nevertheless, they are hopeful that their music will spread and that they will gain attention and a larger fan base upon the release of the album.

“Worst thing that happens [to the people who come to the show] is that they will get a free CD,” Vernon said.

“If they like it, show it to their friends. If they hate it, they can burn it.”
