Georgia women golfers in second in Puerto Rico

By on February 8, 2010

RIO GRANDE, P.R. – The No. 10-ranked Georgia women’s golf team carded a
7-over 295 in Monday’s second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic and
slipped to second place in the 16-team field competing at the Trump
International Golf Course.

“Our score today wasn’t that much higher than yesterday (292), but it didn’t
feel as good,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “Yesterday, we finished
strong. We weren’t able to do that again today. I’m pleased with the way we
played, but we did fizzle a little bit coming in. I think Kendall (Wright),
‘Caro’ (Andrade) and Tess (Fordham) all had bogeys coming in so we lost some
strokes there.”

No. 9 Alabama used a 1-under 287 to gain a five-shot lead over the Bulldogs
entering Tuesday’s final round. The Crimson Tide is at 582, with Georgia
checking in at 587. Rounding out the top-10 teams are: No. 22 Oklahoma State
at 588, No. 4 Purdue at 591, Kent State at 600, Florida State at 603,
Northwestern and Texas Tech both at 603, Baylor at 604 and Oklahoma, which
is coached by former Georgia assistant Véronique Drouin, at 607.

“The temperatures are in the 90s and to be honest, I think we fizzled in the
heat as much as anything,” Hester said. “We’re just not used to it since we
haven’t been in heat like this for a while.”

Sophomore Marta Silva Zamora led the Bulldogs for a second straight day. She
carded a 3-under 69 and is at 5-under 139 entering Tuesday’s final round.
Silva Zamora, who had two wins in the fall, is in a three-way tie for second
just a single stroke off the pace of Baylor’s Hannah Burke.

Freshman Emilie Burger notched her second straight par-or-better loop with a
2-under 70. She is at 2-under 142 and tied for fifth.

The Bulldogs also counted a 77 from Andrade and a 79 from Wright, while
dropping Fordham’s 83. Kiara Hayashida, who is competing as an individual,
shot 82. Overall, Andrade is tied for 32nd at 153, Wright is tied for 47th
at 156, Fordham is tied for 53rd at 157 and Hayashida is 83rd at 169.
