Georgia’s Burger wins Auburn Invitational
AUBURN, Ala. – Georgia freshman Emilie Burger fired a 1-under 71 to capture medalist honors at the one-day Auburn Invitational at the Auburn University Club on Sunday.
“Emilie has been very solid all year,” head coach Kelley Hester said. “Even in the rounds where she didn’t score as well as she would’ve liked, she’s played well. It was great to see her break through and win. She beat some really good people today and picked up a couple of solid head-to-head individual wins.”
The No. 12-ranked Bulldogs finished third. No. 3 Auburn shot 294 to win the team title, followed by No. 17 Florida at 297, Georgia at 301 and No. 13 Vanderbilt at 305.
Following Burger, Milena Savich shot 75 to finish ninth individually, Kendall Wright’s 76 tied for 10th and Carolina Andrade carded a 79 and finished 17th. Georgia dropped an 87 from Tess Fordham. Abby Johnson played as an individual and shot 82 to tie for 21st.
The Bulldogs played without their top performer, Marta Silva Zamora, who is traveling with her parents who are visiting the U.S. from Spain during UGA’s spring break.
“If we stick Marta’s average score in there, we finish second to a very good Auburn team,” Hester said. “But it was good to give some other kids a chance to play. I know Tess and Abby didn’t play as well as they would’ve liked, but this was a good tune-up for the Liz Murphey. Kendall was playing great but stumbled coming in. I think she was even through 16. Milena shot a solid score.”
The tournament was added to Georgia’s schedule after a day of play was cancelled at the Mason Rudolph Championship in the fall. The Auburn University layout will host the 2011 SEC Championships.
“This is a very tough golf course, and I think today will really help us when we come back here next year for SECs,” Hester said. “I know Emilie will be excited to return.”
The Bulldogs will return to action this Friday when they travel to New Orleans to compete in the LSU Tiger/Wave Classic.
