No. 4 softball team dominates in weekend play

By on March 8, 2010

No. 4 Georgia softball completed their home tournament sweep by taking all five games in the Bulldog Invitational, including a 8-0 five-inning victory over Middle Tennessee State on Sunday afternoon.

Led by a balanced approach at the plate and on the base paths, the Bulldogs (18-1) put up six runs in the bottom of the first inning to coast to yet another shutout win.

All-American Taylor Schlopy was once again the spark plug at the top of the lineup as she reached base in every plate appearance while going 2-for-2 with a home run and two runs scored against Middle Tennessee State (4-8).  The junior center fielder would go 7-for-11 in the tournament, while also drawing an additional four walks – bringing her on-base percentage to a staggering .609 for the season.

Sophomore pitcher Erin Arevalo started and went four innings in the shutout win, improving her record to 11-1.

Arevalo has still not allowed an earned run since Georgia’s 3-2 loss to then-No. 6 UCLA on February 14.

Georgia also beat Belmont, Elon and Minnesota twice during the round-robin tournament – highlighted by a combined no-hitter from pitchers Sarah McCloud (4-0) and Alison Owen (1-0) against the Bruins of Belmont.  The no-hitter was No. 24 in school history and the first since McCloud and Christie Hamilton combined to pitch one against Arkansas last season.

The Bulldog Invitational was the last of Georgia’s home tournaments for the year, completing a 15-0 collective run through their host events.

The home stand will not end, though, as Georgia will host the rival No. 10 Florida Gators for a double-header on Wednesday at the the Georgia Softball Complex.
