Stokes was in California Tuesday to meet with students at California State University Long Beach as one of four finalists for the provost position.

“I think Cal State Long Beach can represent the future of the public comprehensive university in this country,” Stokes was quoted saying in the Daily 49er, Cal State Long Beach’s student newspaper. “California has always been a leader, and this looks like a great place to lead public higher education.”

The past several months has seen a handful of top administrators looking at top jobs at other universities. Maureen Grasso, the dean of UGA’s graduate school, was a finalist for the provost position at Kansas State, while David Lee, the vice president for research, was a candidate for the presidential position at Florida Atlantic University. Neither got the job.

According to the Daily 49er story, Stokes said one the aims she seeks to accomplish at Cal State Long Beach is improve campus diversity and the experience of students, which she said was able to accomplish at UGA.
