Regents order audit of employee’s health insurance
The Georgia Board of Regents ordered the audit of all employee’s health insurance dependent coverage on Wednesday, looking to save millions.
Employees will get letters this a month allowing them to voluntarily drop ineligible dependents. Audits of other academia and industry have shown between 8 and 10 percent of covered dependents are not eligible for coverage. With 94,000 people covered under the health plan, 46,000 of them dependents, a 10 percent drop could save the university system $9 million.
“There is no suspicion. First off, it is becoming a general practice in business and higher ed to do audits of these types,” said Tom Scheer, associate vice chancellor for benefits, told the Morris News Service. “Secondarily, it is a major initiative of (regents Chairman Robert) Hatcher . . . We’re not expecting to find a lot of fraud. We’re expecting to find these ineligible dependents due to lack of understanding.”
